Lip flip vs. lip filler: which one do you actually want?

Half the lip consultations in our studio start the same way: "I want my lips done, but I don't want them to look done." Good news, that is exactly our specialty, and the first decision is simpler than the internet makes it seem. A lip flip and lip filler are different tools for different jobs. Here is how I explain the choice in the treatment room.

The lip flip: show more of what you have

A lip flip is a few units of tox (we use Jeuveau, Dysport or Xeomin) placed along the border of the upper lip. It relaxes the muscle that curls your lip inward, so the lip gently rolls outward and shows more of itself when you smile or relax your face. No volume is added. Nothing is filled. Your lip simply stops hiding.

A lip flip is a flat $100 at Üesthetics, which makes it one of the least expensive things we do. The trade-offs: the effect is subtle, it takes about a week to appear, and it lasts roughly 8 to 12 weeks, shorter than tox elsewhere on the face because the dose is so small. It is also the classic fix for a gummy smile, since relaxing that same muscle reduces how much gum shows when you grin.

Lip filler: add shape, structure and volume

Lip filler is hyaluronic acid gel (we use the Restylane and Versa families) placed inside the lips to build volume, definition, symmetry, or all three. This is the tool for genuinely fuller lips, a sharper border, a corrected asymmetry, or restoring volume that has thinned with age. A full syringe at Üesthetics starts at $650, and results last roughly 9 to 18 months, so on a per-month basis it is far less expensive than it first appears.

Filler comes with a real recovery window: swelling and possible bruising for a few days, with everything fully settled by two weeks. Our approach is conservative on purpose. We would rather build your lips across two visits than overfill in one, because lips that look like yours, only better, are the entire point. And if you ever have filler you regret from anywhere, we also dissolve it.

The honest comparison

Choose a lip flip if your lips have a shape you like but they tuck in when you smile, if you want to test the waters with the smallest possible change, if a gummy smile bothers you, or if budget is the deciding factor this month. Choose filler if you want visible volume, crisper definition, longer-lasting results, or correction of asymmetry or age-related thinning. The flip changes how much lip you show; filler changes how much lip you have.

And yes, you can absolutely do both. A flip plus a conservative amount of filler is one of our favorite combinations, because the flip lets a smaller amount of filler go further, which keeps the result soft and natural.
